SBS - no. 1 for research
Strathclyde Business School has been rated top in Scotland - by a long way - and rated in the top 10 UK-wide in the latest comprehensive rating of research, published on 18 December 2008.
This news affirms the School as a leader for "world leading and internationally excellent" research.
The Research Assessment Exercise 2008 results show Strathclyde has a 15 per cent lead on the next best business school in Scotland, and is 25 per cent ahead of the next two business school ratings.
In comparison to the rest of the UK, Strathclyde Business School ranks in the top ten, at seventh equal. This puts Strathclyde in a band with Lancaster, Warwick, Manchester and Oxford, all of whom are regularly cited as being among the best in class.
Professor Susan Hart, Dean of Strathclyde Business School, said: "These results are testimony to the hard work and commitment of colleagues right across Strathclyde Business School.
"Our academic staff have made significant in-roads into producing much needed research that has had a high impact on business thinking for organizations worldwide, as well as on many aspects of practice and policy.
"Over the next five years, we will strive to take this to even higher levels, ensuring our research and its implications are of value to organizations in Scotland and beyond. These times call for intellectual thinking that is put into business practice, and that is very much the business we are in."

Congratulations to MBA Graduate Dr Margit Muller
Dr Muller has been given a special award and a medal by the Abu Dhabi government. She is a veterinarian and the Director of the Falcon Hospital in Abu Dhabi - the world's leading Falcon Hospital. Dr Muller has dedicated her life to the care of Falcons - in addition to her duties at the hospital she performs emergency surgeries at all times of the day and night, saving countless birds in the process. Dr. Muller's research in Abu Dhabi led her to find a cure for a disease found in falcons called Brotzul, which is now registered by the World Health Organization. She was also instrumental in preventing the spread of Avian Flu within the UAE. She has accompanied numerous delegations to countries including Iran, Kazakhstan and Pakistan to oversee the release of falcons into the wild. Dr Muller specializes in over 20 medical procedures and has published dozens of books and articles. She is currently working on a book about falcon medicine, through which she seeks to improve the standard of life and care for birds worldwide. She also dedicates her time to working with falconers, teaching them how to best look after their animals. In raising awareness through her published articles, participation in conferences and by offering guided tours of the hospital, Dr Muller hopes to create greater understanding of the Falcon's important role in Abu Dhabi's cultural heritage.

25th IQ-Net Conference on financial management, control and audit of Structural Funds
LogoThe 25th meeting of the IQ-Net network was held on 19-21 November 2008 in Kifissia, Greece, hosted by the Region of Attikí and the Greek Management & Organisation Unit (MOU). Attended by representatives of national and regional managing authorities from 14 Member States, the main theme of the meeting was financial management, control and audit of Structural Funds programmes. The meeting came at an important time, given the criticisms of the Cohesion policy accounts by the European Court of Auditors, and the increasing problems being faced by programme managers with financial management at audit.
The conference was based on extensive EPRC research on the experiences of financial management, control and audit across the EU and a background paper produced by Dr Sara Davies, Frederike Gross and Laura Polverari of EPRC which was presented at the meeting. The debate was introduced by a presentation by Nicholas Martyn, Director of the Audit Directorate of DG Regio, who also participated in an extensive question-and-answer session with conference delegates. An afternoon of workshop discussions considered how the current problems might be addressed in the present (2007-13) programme period and more substantial changes that might be introduced after 2014.
The IQ-Net conference also provided an opportunity to review recent developments with the implementation of the 2007-13 programmes and the closure of the 2000-06 programmes, based again on EPRC research and a background paper by Heidi Vironen and Stefan Kah of EPRC. The discussions at the conference were complemented by a study visit to projects funded by Structural Funds in the Attikí Region, notably the Foundation of the Hellenic World and the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens.
