'Innovation Cluster' wins ESRC funding for research
ESRC LogoStrathclyde Business School's EPRC and Management Science have been awarded ESRC funding for an exploratory project which aims to enhance understanding of innovation in peripheral, sparsely populated areas.
Led by Dr Sara Davies (EPRC) and Dr Jillian MacBryde (Management Science), this collaborative study will focus especially on 'hidden innovation' in sectors where innovation is linked to aspects of 'peripherality', such as alternative energies; wildlife/landscape tourism; food processing and marketing; and ICT usage in policy delivery by public sector bodies.
This is the first external funding won by SBS's emergent Innovation Cluster, which brings together researchers from SBS and other faculties as well as external researchers and stakeholders.
The project will examine the different aspects and spatial levels of connectivity that matter for innovation, how innovation in peripheral areas is shaped, and how the internal logics of innovation policies at EU, national and sub-national levels influence the capacity of policy-makers to support innovation in peripheral areas. In addition, the project aims to develop research approaches and methods that could be used in a more substantial future research programme on innovation in sectors where innovation is linked to aspects of being peripheral.

Smart Welcome for incoming students
Strathclyde full time MBA students Enobong Ekanem, Fawad Backer and Obinna Nwosu, with the support of Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network, have founded SmartWelcome.com, a Glasgow-based social networking platform which enables migrants, students and workers new to Glasgow to integrate easily into the city.
The site provides access to live, active, local community networks and forums to facilitate any migrant's or student's transition into the city of Glasgow. Each forum on the site provides an avenue for individuals to share experiences, ask - and answer - questions and generally offer any help possible to people who are new in town. Forum participants will be able to provide - and in turn have access to – such information as city location maps, travel, shops, markets, part time jobs, banks and religious centres.
Current students, employees and migrants in Glasgow can register and login to the site and provide online advice to newcomers to the city.
"From my experience, many newcomers and international students are looking for a platform to ask advice from Glaswegians and international students already familiar in the city, and to give real reviews and information from their own experience and knowledge of the city, be it about neighbourhood restaurants, entertainment, advice on utility connections or searching for part time jobs," said Enobong Ekanem.
There are many Glasgow-based forums on different social networking sites, but this is a forum specifically developed for immigrants, newcomers and international students, said co-founder Obinna Nwosu. The aim is to expand the site to cover the whole of Scotland.
