Professor's address on Scottish student finances

Prof. Chris WarhurstProfessor Chris Warhurst of the Scottish Centre for Employment Research addressed the Cross Party Group on Scottish Universities at the Scottish Parliament in September at a meeting attended by MSPs of all parties plus representatives of interest groups. He presented the latest findings on student income, expenditure and debt from recently completed research for the Scottish Government.

The focus of the meeting was financial support for students. Professor Warhurst revealed that in recent years, for the average student studying Chris Warhursthigher education in Scotland, income has decreased, expenditure has decreased and debt has roughly stayed the same. He also highlighted how older students and those students with children have higher debt and that debt levels for both types of student have increased greatly. He ended his presentation with a recommendation for greater future policy focus on these students.
