Students think outside the box

The idea of one bottle containing two different drinks was the winning idea thought up by a team of MBA students in the 'Think Outside the Box Challenge', run as part of Enterprise Week, which took place on November 16 in The Priory at Strathclyde Union.

Organised by Heather Purdie and Dawn McKerracher, the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE) Interns at Strathclyde, the event started with three guest speakers - Amanda Dobbratz from SIE, Tony Hamill from Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network (SEN) and Christina Beveridge, a fourth year Honours Marketing students who has her own salsa-dancing business and lots of entrepreneurial experience. The three speakers spoke to a crowd of 55 cross-faculty students about how to seek help starting up a business and other relevant issues.

The challenge itself involved 18 teams of three: issued with a box, a plastic bottle, post-its and a carrier bag, they were asked to add value to some or all of the items. The value could be social, monetary or creative. Teams had one hour to complete the challenge, and were to be judged by the three guest speakers.

The judges, in an unexpected twist, picked the top three teams who then pitched their idea to the audience who voted on the winners. Asian Attow - full time MBA students Nagarajan Muthian, Dilip Ravindrababu and Tatsuya Adachi - won with their idea of having one bottle, with an internal division, allowing for 2 different drinks in one.

The winning prize was tickets to the Strathclyde Enterprise Awards Dinner the following night, a black tie event in the Fruitmarket. Dawn and Heather presented them with an award and champagne on the stage in front of Sir Tom Hunter, Shaf Rasul from BBC Dragons' Den online, and Radio 1's Dominic Byrne who presented the ceremony.
