BAM workshop

Workshop convenors and attendees

Strathclyde Business School hosted a British Academy of Management workshop on the theme of 'Construing the Research Journey' on December 1.

Barbara Simpson of SBS convened the workshop, along with Angela McGrane of Newcastle Business School and Mary Frances, an independent teacher and consultant.

This event was the inaugural 'Sharing our Struggles' workshop in a series in which people with experience of a particular research approach - in this instance, personal construct theory - help those with less experience to understand that approach.

Knowledge exchange event for government agency staff

The Scottish Centre for Employment Research held a knowledge exchange event for government agencies' staff in December. The half day conference, which was co-hosted by Professor Chris Warhurst of the Centre, Patrick Watt of Skills Development Scotland and Andre Reibig of the Scottish Funding Council, focused on skills and training developments across the Scottish labour market.

The event featured presentations from the centre's successfully completed cohort of PhD students - Pauline Anderson (now of Glasgow Caledonian University), Shiona Chillas (now St Andrews University), Anne Marie Cullen and Scott Hurrel (now Stirling University). The event concluded with Professor Warhurst mapping future research and policy issues arising from the research. Further information about the event can be obtained from chris.warhurst@strath.ac.uk.

Our Swiss partners were one of the sponsors of an event entitled "Doing Business with Scotland" organised by the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Zurich on December 3. Anne MacColl of Scottish Development International (SDI), based in Paris as operations director for Europe, the Middle East and AFrica, made a presentation. Ms MacColl is a Strathclyde MBA graduate and in her speech referred to SBS's strengths as an educational institution in Scotland.

Swiss centre staff Claudia Schmid-Schonbein and BrigitteBruder also met Alan Chalmers of Pharma International Innovation centre in Switzerland. A Strathclyde graduate also, he is heading a group of Strathclyde University Alumni with whom the Swiss alumni organisation (SMAAS) is hoping to link up.
