Lewis innovation event

Dr Sara Davies of EPRC and Dr Jillian MacBryde of the Department of Management Science ran an event in Stornoway in March, in which they asked school students on the Isle of Lewis their views on whether people living in rural areas are more innovative than people in urban areas. The debate was held at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway on March 19.

The debate linked to an ongoing study on the kinds of innovation seen in peripheral regions, as well as on the types of innovation policy support needed in these areas (see http://www.eprc.strath.ac.uk/irr/). The event was held as part of the 2010 Festival of Social Science and was also coordinated with the first Hebridean Science and Technology Festival, organised by ESTEEM, a local community organisation based in Stornoway.

Studying Student Collaboration in Immersive, Virtual Environments

Prototype of the seminar room to be used for the learning events on Second Life's Strathclyde Island.

Dr Catherine Demangeot (Department of Management and International Division) and Howard Ramsay (Centre for Academic Practice and Learning Enhancement) have received an AM/BMAF (Academy of Marketing and Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Business Management Accountancy and Finance) Teaching Research and Development Grant for 2009/10. They will study online student collaboration in immersive environments.

The research will involve two learning events in which, through their avatars, offshore MBA students located in different countries will meet and collaborate in a purpose-built seminar room on 'Strathclyde Island' in the 3D virtual world 'Second Life'.

Of particular interest in this project are issues of trust and cultural identity during collaborative learning activities among avatars.

The Risk Consortium hosted its third workshop on March 23. The Risk Consortium, founded by Professor Tim Bedford, Professor John Quigley, Dr Matthew Revie and Professor Lesley Walls, all of Management Science, was established to provide a platform for selected industry partners to share problems, solutions and cutting-edge techniques for quantitative risk analysis and reliability modelling.

Currently, nine industrial partners have signed up to be part of the Risk Consortium for the next two years with the expectation of developing collaborative links further by bridging the gap between research and industry through training courses, research projects and knowledge exchange projects.
