People, Places and Prosperity: the importance of students and graduates to a region's economy

Professor Robert Wright (Economics) and Ursula Kelly (Information Services) were key speakers at a recent Festival of Social Science seminar, held at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in Sheffield on March 12.

Professor Wright presented findings from his ongoing research as part of the Impact of Higher Education Institutions in Regional Economies initiative. This focussed on micro-econometric analysis of graduate destinations data, and highlighted trends and characteristics of graduate movements across regional boundaries.

Ursula Kelly gave an overview of all of the research initiative work as well as revealing new findings from her recent work about the economic impact of the Yorkshire and Humber universities on their region.

The third speaker was Professor Moira Munro from the University of Glasgow who talked about the impact of students on city life and city economies.
