India visit for HRM professor

Professor Phil Taylor of the Department of Human Resource Management made a multi-purpose visit to India in February.

He continued to develop the links with the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai that have been established on previous visits and gave a guest lecture to students on the Masters programme in Globalisation and Labour Studies. Professor Taylor discussed with the Dean (Professor Bhowmik) and Faculty staff the opportunities for student exchange, joint supervision and research collaboration.

Professor Taylor also attended the National Association for Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) Conference in Mumbai, the key forum for discussing developments in Indian and global BPO (Business Process Outsourcing). Participation was for research purposes and for understanding the threats and opportunities posed to Scotland's business process and contact centre employment in the wake of the global recession.

He then undertook research fieldwork in Bengaluru, conducting interviews with employees and managers regarding the changes to work and working conditions since the financial crisis of 2008.
