Two business school academics have been awarded the University's first Teaching Excellence Awards in an initiative managed by the University Student Association.

Four business school academics were in the overall shortlist of ten. George Vlachos of the Department of Management was named as winner of the Outstanding Teacher award and Dr Jim Hamill of the Department of Marketing was named as the winner of the Innovative Teacher Award. The awards took place at the Students' Union on March 24.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges from a shortlist created after nominations were received from over 300 students, with 100 individual lecturers nominated. Each of the 10 nominees received a personalised certificate with a quote pertaining to their teaching included.

Nominees for the Outstanding Teacher award had to be: stimulating, enthusiastic and consistently challenging, stemming from expert knowledge of the subject, how to teach it and how learners learn.

The final shortlist of five included eventual winner George Vlachos and Dr Kevin O'Gorman, both Department of Management.

Nominees for the Innovative Lecturer Award had to demonstrate: innovation in learning, teaching and assessment, an outstanding contribution to leading edge content and curriculum design, while enhancing the reputation of the university's learning and teaching internally, nationally or internationally. The final shortlist of five included, from SBS, Dr Jim Hamill of Marketing and Dr Jonathan Levie, Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, with Dr Hamill ultimately winning.

The panel of judges consisted of Philip Whyte, President, Students' Association, Anne Hughes, Deputy Principal, a student representative from each faculty, along with the Vice Dean (Academic) of each Faculty or their chosen representative.

Deputy Principal Anne Hughes said, "I was delighted to present these awards and to recognise the excellent teaching that goes on across the university. Teachers from every faculty in the university were nominated, which demonstrates the high quality throughout the university and the high interest from students. Congratulations to all those excellent teachers and to the Strathclyde Students Association for all the work they put in to make this such a successful launch of Teaching Awards here at Strathclyde."

Philip Whyte, Students' Association President, said: "From the student perspective I would view the awards as a fantastic success story, and one which serves to highlight the innovation and dedication which can so often go unnoticed. The engagement and feedback from staff and students alike has been entirely positive and I only hope we can build on this for future years. All nominations received point to an academic body that is sector leading, and a true testament to the ability and knowledge present at Strathclyde."
