PLC awards - winners announced

Aggreko were triple winners at the latest Scotland PLC awards 2010, run by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Scottish Business Insider, and of which Strathclyde Business School is the research sponsor.

Running now for 12 years, Strathclyde has been involved from the beginning in providing the essential research needed to judge the award categories.

Strathclyde's independent research provides impartial data for the judges to make their decisions, with site visits carried out for the innovation, global reach and sustainability awards.

The awards - a major event in the Scottish corporate calendar - were held on April 21 at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel, hosted this year by former barrister and television and radio personality Clive Anderson.

Dean of SBS, Professor Susan Hart, made a speech relating to SBS's role as research sponsor and noted that following a year of financial crisis and credit crunch, came a year in which the environment 'had shown unanticipated turbulence of both ice and, just last week, fire.'

She continued, "Winter weather is reported to have affected 95% of all businesses and significantly disrupted 58% - up from 25% in previous years. The economic impact of the eruption of Iceland's 'glacier volcano' is causing an estimated £130 million per day in lost revenues to airlines. TUI says it is losing over £5 million a day and the cost of lost revenues through cancelled meetings, stranded staff and delays is as yet untold. In the face of such uncertainties, what distinguishes the companies we are celebrating here tonight?

"Strathclyde Business School's independent research provides impartial and robust data for the judges to make their decisions on corporate Scotland. Each year, we examine each of the plcs; we analyse financial results and ratio, press and trade commentaries, and broker reports.

"Underlying the top performances we have consistently observed three key features. Our best plcs invest in products and service, as well as processes; invest in creating and nurturing global connections, both filtered through the lens of sustainability; invest more in research and development. They forge ahead with new product and service launches, intentions firmly focused on customers' needs. They innovate through embracing change and look to international horizons whilst responding to the challenge of finding new, sustainable pathways through competition. This has required transformational leadership. These leaders accept the unanticipated, embrace change, and advocate action, with ambition, belief and commitment."
