Triple celebrations for accounting and finance student

Amongst all the happy graduates on July 9 was one business school student who achieved more than most in her final year - as well as passing her finance degree with flying colours and a new graduate job with global company Aon, she became a mum at the start of this year.

Becoming a new mum is a full-time occupation in itself, but Gemma (23),originally from Lochboisdale, South Uist, juggled looking after her newborn baby Ewen with her honours year studies and job hunting, and despite having Ewen in February, with all the tiredness and time demands that a new baby brings, Gemma achieved a 2:1 BA honours degree at the Department of Accounting and Finance within Strathclyde Business School.

She said, "It has been really hard work, but my friends and lecturers have been fantastic. I had Ewen in the third week of the semester, which meant I missed a lot of lectures, but the University staff sent me notes to help me keep up.

"The first few weeks were exhausting - Ewen was up every two hours, just before my exams. But my two sisters, Ruth and Rachel, and my partner Angus, have been amazing and really helped me keep going.

"It's all been worthwhile. Ewen is perfect and I'm really happy to be graduating and starting my new job with Aon."

Professor Andrew Marshall, head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, said, "I would like to congratulate Gemma on all her achievements during the year. Gemma has worked extremely hard to combine her demanding honours studies with her new baby. Her work ethic and dedication to her studies has been excellent and I am sure she has an excellent future ahead of her with Aon.

"The Department looks forward to watching her - and Ewen - progress."
