Work, Employment and Society Conference

Members of the Department of Human Resource Management played an integral part at the recent Work, Employment and Society Conference held at Brighton University.

For the last three years the Department has hosted the British Sociological Association's 4* journal, Work, Employment and Society, the leading journal in the sociology of work and employment.

The editorial team of Professor Phil Taylor, Professor Chris Warhurst (now at Sydney University), Professor Paul Thompson and Professor Dora Scholarios were involved in a number of events at the conference, including an opening plenary by professors Taylor and Warhurst which reflected on the department's tenure of the editorship before it hands it on at the end of the year.

In addition, Professors Taylor and Warhurst gave joint presentations to the postgraduate seminar and a 'Meet the Editors' session, at which four leading journals participated. Professors Dennis Nickson, Paul Stewart and Paul Thompson were also sub-plenary speakers: Professor Nickson presented on emotional and aesthetic labour, Professor Stewart talked about the publication of his recent book 'We Sell Our Time No More: Workers' Struggles Against Lean Production in the British Car Industry' and Professor Thompson chaired and spoke at a session on Ethnography. Papers were also presented by Dr Kirsty Newsome, Dr Ian Cunningham and Professor Taylor.
