Energy economics research at the Fraser of Allander Institute

Several members of the Fraser of Allander Institute presented papers on energy-related economic research during the last month.

Grant Allan and Igor Eromenko participated in the 39th annual conference of the Regional Science Association international: British and Irish Section, held in Glasgow from August 25-27.

Grant Allan presented a paper concerned with modelling the regional economic impact of biofuels development, and Igor Eromenko presented a literature review on the economics of distributed energy generation. Michelle Gilmartin attended the 11th International Association of Energy Economics European conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, from August 25-28. She presented a paper on the economic impact of the development of a domestic and export market for UK-manufactured tidal energy devices.

These papers represent some of the ongoing work in complementary energy-related research projects being conducted at the FAI, which includes research for the EU-funded BioMara project, which looks at the economic, social and techno-economic aspects of the generation of biofuel from algal biomass. As a member of the EPSRC/SuperGen Highly Distributed Energy Futures consortium, the Institute is examining the potential role and economic impact of distributed energy resources in the future UK power system, and in its EPSRC/SuperGen Marine research project, the Institute is considering alternative economic perspectives on energy futures, focusing on the economic effects of increased penetration of marine renewable energy.
