Newsnight Scotland Interview

Professor Dennis Nickson from the Department of Human Resource Management was interviewed as part of a feature by BBC Two's Newsnight Scotland on October 7. The feature considered the issue of welfare reform and unemployment. Professor Nickson commented on the UK Government's plans for getting people on benefits back into work.

Journal invite for Hunter Centre professor

Professor Colin Mason (Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship) has been invited to join the Editorial Board of Annals of Innovation, a multi-disciplinary and international peer-reviewed Open Access journal. Its aims are to promote a better understanding of the nature, process and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship as a key factor in economic development. The first issue has just been published and is available here.

HRM professor is international guest speaker at tourism conference

Professor Tom Baum (Human Resource Management) was the invited international guest speaker at a stakeholder symposium organised by the Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA) in Vientiane which brought together public and private tourism and education interests to address the implementation of the National Human Resource Development Strategy for the sector.

Professor Baum was involved as an advisor during the development of the Strategy two years ago. Lao PDR is on the cusp of major growth as a tourism destination but retains much of the old-world charm (and poverty) which is less evident in rapidly growing neighbours such as Thailand and Vietnam. A focus on tourism and its service/ human resource component is recognised as crucial to the destination's growth and competitiveness.

Research links with Curtin Graduate Business School

Professor Robert Chia (Department of Management) gave a research seminar entitled "Strategy without design: the silent efficacy of indirect action" to the academic faculty of Curtin Graduate Business School on October 12. At the request of Curtin, Professor Chia will also be exploring possible research collaboration opportunities between Strathclyde and Curtin for colleagues in the Department of Management.

Professor Chia is also running research seminars for academic staff and research students at the University of St Gallen next February, and has been invited to contribute a feature article on 'The Ontology of Decision' to one of the top French academic journals, Revue Francaise de Gestion.

Faculty lecture by accounting and finance professor

Professor David Hillier, Accounting and Finance Department, will be delivering the next Strathclyde Business School faculty lecture on "The Psychology of Finance". The lecture will take place on November 11 in the Senate Suite, Collins Building at 6pm.
