CIMA accredits Masters programmes

Dr Julia Smith has been working with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) towards gaining accreditation for the Department's Master's degrees. This means that all four of the Department of Accounting and Finance's MSc programmes are now accredited by CIMA. Exemptions will be awarded from CIMA's professional examinations, according to the route taken through the MSc.

The exemptions for the MSc in Finance extend to distance learning students studying at The Institute of Finance Management, Tanzania, and International Management Studies, Greece.

Aggreko visit Accounting and Finance

Jill Adamson, Aggreko plc's Group Tax Manager and graduate recruitment team member for their TOPPS (Training Outside Public Practice) programme, visited Honours students in the Department of Accounting and Finance to promote an available CA contract commencing in the Autumn of 2011.

Given the international spread of Aggreko's business, Jill gave some insight into the workings of an international tax and finance team and some practical examples of the interaction of commercial, finance, treasury and tax functions in servicing cross border contracts and overseas projects.

Accounting and finance papers

Professor Andrew Marshall and Dr Leilei Tang have had their paper "Assessing the Impact of Heteroskedasticity for Evaluating Hedge Fund Performance" accepted for publication in the journal International Review of Financial Analysis.

Tiago Cardao-Pito has had his paper "Intangible Flow Theory" accepted for publication in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology.

Research seminar for professor 'down under'

Professor Alan Wilson of the Marketing Department delivered a research seminar to staff and research students at the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science in the University of South Australia, Adelaide. The seminar reported on a programme of research undertaken in Switzerland, Scotland and Spain examining consumers' use of shared online "content" in the context of the hospitality and travel sector.

Research grants for marketing professor

Professor Stan Paliwoda (Department of Marketing) has been awarded two research grants in the last few weeks. First he was informed that IP Management Poland had awarded him £7200 for a study relating to the marketing of IP. This month he received news that his application to the Carnegie Trust for £2000 has also been successful.

Special award for professor

During the Cognition in the Rough (CIR) workshop at the annual Academy of Management meeting in Montreal, a special award was given to Professor Colin Eden (Department of Management) who has participated in CIR for ten years. He joins an elite group of CIR international scholars who have completed a decade of participation in the workshop.

Best paper award at ANZMAC

Dr Catherine Demangeot of the Department of Marketing presented a paper, co-written with Dr Kizhekepat Shankar (Department of Management) at the ANZMAC (Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy) conference at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, November 29-December 1. The paper won the best paper award in the international category.
