Fourth seminar in Nostalgia in the 21st Century series

The fourth seminar in the ESRC (Economics and Social Research Council) seminar series, Nostalgia in the 21st Century, took place on January 21 in the Department of Marketing. The series' aim is to encourage dialogue between different disciplinary approaches in order to promote further enquiry into the uses of nostalgia in contemporary culture, and especially its links to technology.

Seminar 4 explored nostalgic evocations of the homeland and the impact of new technologies on diaspora communities. The seminar included four presentations. Professor Lisa Peñaloza from EDHEC Business School spoke about Family Identity, Memory, and the Market in Mexican Transnational Families. Dr Daniela Sime, from HaSS at the University of Strathclyde, discussed Eastern European migrant children's experiences of life in Scotland and nostalgia over homeland.

Professor Susan Holak from the Business Department at the City University of New York explored manifestations of food-related nostalgia in the Russian Diaspora, while Dr Silvia Mejía from the College of Saint Rose, Albany (Foreign Languages Department & American Studies Programme) discussed the concept of digital nostalgia within the context of Ecuadorian migration in the era of global capitalism.

There were a total of 30 participants from 13 universities who enjoyed various networking activities throughout the day. The seminar ended with a tour of The People's Palace.
