MBA students work with newspaper group

A strategic investigation event involving full-time MBA students and The Herald's CEO Tom Thomson and his management team yielded ideas which will be investigated further by the newspaper group.

The Herald team worked with the MBA students during a workshop event on February 16 in a strategic investigation and idea generation workshop.

The session focussed on the challenge Scottish newspapers are facing in terms of annual declines in circulation and a move by younger users to the internet where a successful business model for news content online has not yet emerged.

Tim Blott, Managing Director, said, "On behalf of the Herald & Times Group I would like to thank you, the students and the event organisers for such a productive brainstorming session at the business school.

"We were universally impressed with the calibre and engagement of the students and with the fertility of the ideas that emerged.

"We are now analysing which points to follow up in the company. It was a very useful evening which we all much appreciated."

Dr George Burt, Department of Management, organised the event. He said, "I'd like to commend the students for their professionalism and enthusiasm. Following on from the event it is worth noting that the Herald & Times Group invited two of the students to join their management conference in March.

"The Herald & Times Group has also initiated a new revenue generation source, and they have been in contact with a major newspaper group in India to learn about an initiative that increased newspaper circulation there. Both of these ideas emerged from the night."
