New visiting professor for SBS

Colin Duthie has joined Strathclyde Business School as a visiting professor. Colin established his own company in 2005 to concentrate on leadership development and talent management project and interim management roles working at Main Board and Executive Team level.

Through his company Colin is currently Leadership Development Director for a financial trust company, Learning and Development Projects Director for an international drinks manufacturer, leadership and talent management expert for a London-based international strategy and coaching company and talent and leadership development director for an international search firm.

Prior to launching his own company, Colin had a very successful full time career in HR in the private sector, focusing on designing and implementing cutting edge leadership development, talent management and succession planning processes and practices latterly as Group Director of Leadership Development and Talent Management with a FTSE top 30 international energy company.

As visiting professor at Strathclyde, Colin is attached to the Centre for Corporate Connections.

Journal of Islamic Marketing board appointment

Dr Aliakbar Jafari (Department of Marketing) has been appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Islamic Marketing. Launched in 2010, the Journal of Islamic Marketing aims to lay the foundation of, and advance, Islamic marketing as a new discipline. It also aims to provide a world-class forum for researchers, academics, and business people where all issues related to Islamic marketing can be actively debated.

Doctoral student to represent Strathclyde at US consortium

Jillian Ney of the Department of Marketing has been nominated to attend the prestigious American Marketing Association, Sheth Doctoral Consortium. The 46th annual consortium will be held at Oklahoma State University between June 15 and 18. Jillian is the second student to represent Strathclyde at the consortium, which is normally reserved for North American students. Jillian is looking forward to representing Strathclyde and presenting her doctoral research.

Research presented at US conference

Dr Fred Lemke, Department of Marketing, together with Dr Gary Goodman, Professor of Political science at Marshall Goldsmith School of Management, were invited to present their new research stream at the 69th MPSA (Midwest Political Science Association) National Conference, which takes place in Chicago from March 31 to April 3.

Their contribution is entitled, "Explaining the Relationship Experience between Politicians and Voters – The Next Marketing Weapon" which went through a highly competitive double-blind review process. The work was well received by leading political science scholars attending the conference and as a result both Dr Lemke and Dr Goodman are looking forward to making an impact in the international political science arena.

Award winning marketing article

An article written by Barbara Caemmerer, Honorary Research Fellow in the Marketing Department and Professor Alan Wilson has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2011. The paper is entitled "Customer feedback mechanisms and organisational learning in service operations" and was published in the International Journal of Operations & Production Management.

Accounting and finance appointments

Dr Andrea Coulson (Accounting and Finance) has accepted invitations to join The Climate Change Working Group of IAAER (International Association for Accounting Education and Research) and ACCA, and also the Editorial Board of Business Strategy and the Environment Journal and the Journal of Applied Accounting Research.

Professor Andrew Marshall has been nominated and approved to serve on the Qualification Board of ICAS.

Virtual life seminar

Professor John Quigley of the Department of Management Science held a seminar in the 3D virtual world Second Life on February 16. The seminar was a component of the "Foundations of Risk" course being run in partnership with Dalhouse University for the Canada School of Public Service.

The participants were civil servants from around Canada. Using this technology allowed rich engagement for a low cost as participants were observed to follow the social norms of a face-to-face seminar. The seminar was one of a series of four with the second being run by Dr Calvin Burns of the Department of Human Resource Management. The seminars were supported by Howard Ramsay of the Centre of Academic Practice & Learning Enhancement.

Professor 'bowled over' at speech

Professor Tom Baum (Department of Human Resource Management) was recently invited to give a guest lecture at Leeds Metropolitan University, and was also a keynote speaker at a conference on "Skills for Employability and Citizenship", hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University where he spoke on "Skills for employment in the personal services sector". While at Leeds, he was able to indulge his passion for cricket as the lecture theatre at LMU is located on the 5th floor of one of the stands at Headingley.

Editorial board appointment for Economics professor

Professor Robert Wright, Department of Economics, has been appointed to the editorial board of the new journal Contemporary Social Science, which is the journal of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Papers accepted for presentation and publication

Drs K Sankaran and Catherine Demangeot's paper "Social Capital: Useful but Transient" has been accepted for presentation at the "Complexity Theory at the Macro Level" track within the Academy of Management Conference at San Antonio, TX, USA, in mid-August 2011.

Dr K Sankaran and Mr Srijayan Iyer's paper - "Governance Tools for Board Members: Adapting Strategy Maps and Balanced Score Cards for Directorial Action" - has been accepted for publication in Business and Law (ISSN 1822-9530). A special issue of the journal is to carry papers selected from those that were presented at the HBMeU Annual Congress in Dubai in Feb 2011. Srijayan is a recent alumnus of Strathclyde UAE.
