Research on envy featured in magazine article

The subject of a book chapter by Dr Marina Biniari of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship – corporate envy – has been incorporated into an article printed in Australian magazine, 'In the Black'.

The book chapter – Corporate envy and emotional dynamics in the internal selection process of corporate venturing initiatives - is included in the Emotions and Organizational Dynamism handbook (W Zerbe, C Hartel and N Ashkanasy), published in 2010. The book chapter is part of a portfolio of papers Dr Biniari has developed over the last three years exploring the role of envy in organisational processes such as organisational innovation and corporate entrepreneurship and how envy can be managed.

In the 'In the Black' article, "Beware the acid of envy", Dr Biniari points out that while studying envy within a multinational corporation in the information and media industry, she discovered people distanced themselves from the person or team they envied by withholding information and ceasing to co-operate, and the envied team was subjected to hostility, scepticism and devaluation of its capabilities. The team was subsequently isolated when co-workers withheld critical resources.

Dr Biniari has another two papers from this portfolio accepted for publication by the Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice journal and selected at the Best Papers Proceedings of the 2011 Academy of Management conference.
