Risk consortium hosts fifth workshop

The Risk Consortium hosted its 5th workshop on March 28 at the University of Strathclyde. The workshop was attended by representatives from, amongst others, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, SELEX Galileo, Scottish Water and the Ministry of Defence. A total of 18 participants, including Professor Tim Bedford, Professor John Quigley, Dr Matthew Revie and Professor Lesley Walls from the Department of Management Science, took part in a productive day of developing new modelling techniques and discussing current industry challenges.

A presentation was given by RSSB (Railway Safety and Standards Board) on how they provide decision-making guidance to rail operators, while a discussion session, led by SELEX Galileo and the Ministry of Defence, explored the changing nature of warranty modelling in the defence industry and how modelling in the area of risk can impact upon this change.

Presentations were given by Strathclyde academics on the construction of Bayesian Networks and a presentation on the role of trust in safety management was given by Dr Calvin Burns from the Department of Human Resource Management.

The Risk Consortium was established by the Department of Management Science to provide a platform for selected industry partners to share problems, solutions and cutting-edge techniques for quantitative risk analysis and reliability modelling. The overall objective of the Risk Consortium is to develop and apply innovative methodologies with a sound scientific basis that support risk-based decision making across industry, business and government. The aim of the Risk Consortium is to bridge the gap between research and industry. In particular, the aim is to bring together different industries that share similar problems and establishing complementary solutions. The research areas the consortium contributes to include reliability, maintainability and availability modelling, common cause failure modelling, human reliability, decision analysis and modelling competing risks.
