Royal Statistical Society talk for management science academic

Professor John Quigley from the department of Management Science was one of five invited presenters to talk at the Royal Statistical Society's General Application Section meeting on April 20.

A key theme of the one day meeting was to explore recent advances in statistical research towards supporting engineering decision making. Professor Quigley presented on collaborative work he is doing with Professor Lesley Walls on assessing the condition of the Forth Road Bridge.

Award-winning paper for marketing academic

A paper co-written by Dr Beverly Wagner of the Marketing Department, together with Alastair Brandon-Jones, University of Bath, and John Ramsay, University of Stafford, has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2011.

The article, entitled "Trading interactions: supplier empathy consensus and bias", was published in International Journal of Operations & Production Management. The award-winning papers are chosen following consultation amongst the journal's Editorial Team, many of whom are eminent academics or managers. The paper was selected as it was judged 'one of the most impressive pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2010'.

USA conference for doctoral students

Sergio Costa, Orla Byrne and Russell Matthews, PhD students within the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, have been accepted to the 2011 Doctoral Consortium Program organised jointly by Babson College and The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, New York, USA. This year's conference will be held at Syracuse between June 7 and 12.

Sergio Costa is exploring the emergence and evolution of business models in early-stage university spin-offs, by using a longitudinal multiple case study design. Orla Byrne is investigating the impact of failure on entrepreneurs and how they recover from their experience, while Russell Matthews is studying the formation and development of top management teams in peripheral region high technology ventures.

PhD student's internship with Scottish Government

Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship PhD student Russell Matthews is coming into his final month of a position working for the Scottish Government after being awarded an internship through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) back in February 2011.

Russell has been based in Edinburgh working for Health Analytical Services and the Commonwealth Games Legacy Team in order to draft a report detailing the progress and evaluation systems of programmes under the Commonwealth Games Legacy banner. Legacy programmes aim to have a wide range of impacts including, amongst others, the improvement of business capacity to win and deliver games-related contracts, the physical regeneration of Glasgow's East End, increases in physical activity levels, and the enhancement of Scotland's position as a tourist and events location.

Russell has been liaising with policy leads and analysts across a wide range of organisations and his findings will be passed on to a newly-appointed full-time legacy programme coordinator in June.

Accounting and Finance external appointments

Professor Andrew Marshall, head of the Accounting and Finance department, was successfully nominated to join the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland's qualification Board. His first meeting was on May 18.

Dr Andrea Coulson has accepted invitations to join the Climate change Working Group of IAAER (International Association for Accounting Education and Research) and ACCA. She has also taken up an invitation to join the editorial boards of Business Strategy and the Environment Journal, and the Journal of Applied Accounting Research.

Economics Department's latest Seminar

Maurizio Zanardi of the Universite Libre de Bruxelles is the latest speaker in the Economics Department's seminar series.

He will be speaking on 'Policymakers' Horizon and Trade Reforms' on May 25 in the Sir William Duncan Building. His talk will look at how differences in term length between the House and Senate in the US Congress, in which members serve two-year and six-year mandates respectively, affect their willingness to support economic reforms.

Research presentations for accounting academic

Dr Julia Smith of Accounting and Finance presented a paper, jointly written with Gavin Reid of St Andrews, 'A Stated Preference Analysis of Accounting Standards Adoption', to the annual conference of the British Accounting and Finance Association at Aston Business School which ran from April 12-14.

They also presented a research seminar of their work on 'Venture Capital Investor Behaviour in the Backing of UK High Technology firms' to an audience at Dundee Business School, University of Abertay, on May 6.
