Professor in demand at HRM conferences

Professor Phil Taylor of the Department of Human Resource Management was kept busy in May with numerous engagements. He was a panel member at a plenary session of the Shared Service Network Conference Amsterdam on May 11 entitled, "The Coming New Wave - Taking a Closer Look at Emerging Markets". He was invited as an expert on the global location of contact centres and business processes.

He was also a keynote speaker at the National Australia Bank Global Unions Conference held in Glasgow from May 12-13. The title of Professor Taylor's presentation given to union and management representatives from Australia, New Zealand and the UK was 'Lean, Performance Management and Sickness Absence Management - Finance Sector Workers Paying for the Crisis?'

Next up was a keynote presentation to Unite the Union 'Finance Sector - Change at Work School' at Eastbourne on May 17. The contribution was filmed by the Union's Education Department for use in future training activities.

On May 18, Professor Taylor gave seminar contributions at two London Universities. First was a conference at Queen Mary (University of London), organised by the public sector group of BUIRA (British Universities Industrial Relations Association), where Professor Taylor spoke on the privatisation of prisons, a subject he has researched with Professor Christine Cooper of the Department of Accounting and Finance. Second was at the Working Lives Research Institute of London Metropolitan University where he gave a talk entitled, 'From Boom to Where? The Experience of Post-Crisis Work and Employment in Offshored BPO in India."

Finally, Professor Taylor gave a keynote presentation to the Communication Workers Union annual conference at Bournemouth on May 24. His talk - 'Performance Management, Lean and Sickness Absence Management' - contributed to the lively debate by delegates on the subjects.
