Another editorial cap for marketing professor

Professor Mark Tadajewski of the Department of Marketing has been appointed Editor of the Routledge Studies in Critical Marketing series, which was recently launched by Routledge and Taylor & Francis. This series forms part of the prestigious Routledge Research Programme and will reflect the latest cutting-edge thinking in Critical Marketing Studies. Professor Tadajewski will edit the Series with Professor Pauline Maclaran of Royal Holloway, University of London.

Academy of Management annual meeting presentation

Dr Viktor Dorfler of the Management Science Department attended the Academy of Management Annual Meeting from August 12-16 in San Antonio, TX. He presented a paper "Intuition as a Research Method for Investigating the Extraordinary" as part of the "Intuition in Organizations" symposium. The paper introduces the methodological approach developed in collaboration with Professor Colin Eden as part of the Grandmaster Project. Dr Dörfler also chaired the session "Intuition in Organizations". He also received two outstanding reviewer awards, one from the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) division and another from the Management Education and Development (MED) division.

EFMD conference

Head of marketing and student recruitment at Strathclyde Business School, Melissa McCrindle, was one of the speakers at an EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) conference on October 6 in Brussels.

Entitled 'Creating an Effective Marketing and Sales Process in Business Schools', the seminar also featured talks by Chris Greensted, Quality Services, EFMD, Damien Roux of E M Lyon Business School, and Erik Mehl, BI, Norway.

The speakers addressed a range of topics taking a comparative approach. EFMD is one of the international bodies which accredit business schools, along with AACSB, and AMBA for MBA programmes.

Vice-president role for Professor

Professor Tom Baum, Human Resource Management department, has been elected Second Vice-President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. He was one of the invited participants at the biennial meeting of the International Academy held in Taiwan in June this year.

Doctoral student presents at conference

Doctoral student Leighanne Higgins (Department of Marketing) attended the 'Religion as Brands: The Marketization of Religion' conference at Lausanne University in Switzerland from October 13-15 to present a paper entitled; 'Strategic Compliance: The Catholic Consumer's Balancing Strategy to Consumerism'. This international conference deals with religious markets and how religions try to market and brand themselves.

Her supervisor Dr Kathy Hamilton attended the Advances in Consumer Research Conference at St Louis in America to from October 13-16, to present a paper they co-wrote entitled, 'Is the Crucifix Sacred? Exploring the Catholic Consumption of sacred vessels in Building Connection with the Sacred'.

Austrian lecture tour for professor

At the invitation of Professor Rudolf Winter-Ebmer, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Professor Robert Wright, Department of Economics, recently delivered three lectures in the field of population economics at several higher education institutions in Austria.

On October 11, he spoke on the topic on "Regionality and Immigration Policy" at the Vienna Institute of Demography. On October 12, he delivered a lecture at the University of Linz titled "Under-employment and Migration" while on October 13, at Vienna University of Technology, he spoke about "Computable General Equilibrium Modelling and Demographic Research".

Editor role for accounting and finance academic

John Ferguson (Accounting and Finance) has recently been appointed joint editor of Social and Environmental Accountability Journal (SEAJ) for a four year term commencing January 2012. Click here for more details of the journal.

Paper accepted for journal

Congratulations to Jonathan Fletcher and John Capstaff (Department of Accounting and Finance) who have had a paper accepted by The Journal of Business Finance and Accounting. The paper is entitled: "Long term performance and choice of SEO method by UK firms".

Researchers defend their theses

The Department of Management has recently had three students present for doctoral vivas within a four week period all of whom successfully defended their thesis subject to minimum changes. The three students are Peter Keenan (PhD), Dieter Leimenstoll (DBA) and Zaleha Yazid (PhD).

In the news

The Dean of Strathclyde Business School, Professor Susan Hart, featured in the autumn publication of BQ Magazine. The article, entitled "Hart of the Matter", focused on Professor Hart's own academic path, her vision for the school and how teaching and research have clear benefits for business.

Professor Bhimaraya Metri, Dean of Strathclyde SKIL Business School in Greater Noida, India, had an opinion piece published in India publication, The Tribune on October 12.

Entitled "Executive Edge", the article focused on the value of executive MBA programmes.
