Visiting academics to Accounting and Finance Department

Professors Krishna Paudyal and David Hillier (Accounting and Finance) have been working with Dr Herbert Lam, Assistant Professor of Finance, from Renmin University of China, Beijing. Dr Lam visited the Department from October 24 to October 28 to continue work on joint research projects, media coverage and a range of issues in finance.

Professor Wei Zhang, the Dean of the College of Management and Economics, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, visited the Accounting and Finance Department on September 30 to discuss potential research and postgraduate teaching collaborations between Tianjin and Strathclyde universities in the area of finance. Professors Susan Hart (SBS Dean), David Hillier, Andrew Marshall, and Krishna Paudyal were involved in the discussions.

Paper accepted for Business Research Journal

Professor Krishna Paudyal of the Department of Accounting and Finance (and his co-authors) have had a paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Research. The paper is entitled, 'Legal Systems and Gains from Cross-Border Acquisitions'.

Economics papers at North American Regional Science conference

Research student Stuart McIntyre (Department of Economics) presented a paper at the North American Regional Science conference in Miami, Florida, which took place November 9-12. Entitled 'Spatial Individual Effects Probit Model of the 2010 UK General Election', the paper is joint work with Christa D. Jensen, Regional Research Institute, West Virginia University; and Donald J. Lacombe, Regional Research Institute, West Virginia University.

Professor Kim Swales also presented a paper at this conference. His paper – 'The Importance of Graduates for the Scottish Economy: A "Macro-to-Micro" Approach' - is joint work with Professor Peter McGregor (Economics); Kristinn Hermannsson (Economics); Katerina Lisenkova (Economics); and Patrizio Lecca (Economics).

The Department of Management awards prizes to students each year. This year, the prizes were awarded as follows:

Italian lectures for Economics professor

Professor Robert E. Wright, Department of Economics, travelled to Italy in October where he delivered invited lectures in labour economics at the Faculty of Economics, University of Bologna and at the School of Economics and Business, University of Padova.

Finance paper presentation at Italian university

Dr John Ferguson (Accounting and Finance) was recently invited to the University of Bergamo, Italy, where he gave a paper entitled, 'Financialization and Company Law: A Study of the UK Company Law Review.'

Keynote speaker at tourism conference

Professor Richard Butler was keynote plenary speaker at the International Conference on Tourism and Management Studies held October 25-28 in Faro, Portugal, in October, organised by the University of the Algarve. Professor Butler's speech was titled "Tourism Past Present and Future: Plus ca change, plu c'est la meme chose".

Marketing conference talks for professor

On November 8, Professor Alan Wilson of the Marketing Department delivered a presentation at the one day Social Media Conference held as part of 'Glasgow for Business' week. He also joined Dr Jim Hamill, previously of the Marketing Department, in one of the Question and Answer panel sessions. A large cross-section of the business community attended with more than 150 people registering for the event.

In Kuala Lumpur, on November 15, Professor Wilson delivered an evening seminar entitled "The Changing Nature of Marketing Research" to an audience of marketing and marketing research practitioners. The event was hosted by the Chartered Institute of Marketing-Malaysia.

Spanish edition of book published

Dr Michael Harker of the Department of Marketing along with Ross Brennan of Middlesex and Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong from the US have had - in conjunction with colleagues from ESIC in Madrid - a Spanish-language edition of their introductory reader in marketing - 'Marketing: an Introduction' - published by Pearson Prentice-Hall.

Finance students host senior members of industry

Second and third year Financial Markets students hosted a Panel Session on November 21 with the theme, 'Have the Financial Markets decoupled from the Real Economy?"

Three senior members of industry agreed to act as panel members at the event in the Graham Hills Building. They were Daniel Broby, Chief Investment Officer, SilkInvest; Garry Stern, Head Of Corporate Banking Division Operations, Royal Bank of Scotland; Gary Pringle: Gary Pringle MCIBS, Asset Pricing Product Manager & Vice-President, Worldwide Securities Services, JP Morgan.

Management academic gives opening speech for DREaM project

Dr Paul Lynch, Department of Management was opening speaker at an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded DREaM project workshop held at Napier University, Edinburgh. The DREaM project is concerned with Developing Research Excellence and Methods as part of the development of a formal UK-wide network of Library and Information Science (LIS) researchers. Dr Lynch's presentation given at the first of three workshops was on the topic of an Introduction to Ethnography.
