Dean's external appointments

Professor Susan Hart, Dean of Strathclyde Business School, has recently taken on two new external roles. She has been appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Chartered Institute of Marketing, with the role of Dean of the CIM's Academic Senate as of this month, having joined in June 2008. Another recent appointment has been to the board of the Yorkhill Children's Foundation, working towards helping raise the profile further of the Yorkhill Children's Trust.

Major study to inform International Labour Office policy

Professor Tom Baum of the Human Resource Management Department has undertaken a major study of Migrant Labour in the International Hotel Industry on behalf of the International Labour Office (ILO). The study included a detailed survey of organisational policy and practice with respect to migrant workers in over 50 companies worldwide, together with the development of a range of case studies, illustrating the varying roles and conditions of migrants within the sector in different cultures and countries. The study will be used to inform ILO policy in this area and to inform the ILO's Decent Work agenda.

Professor Ibeh elected Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing

Professor Kevin Ibeh, Head of the Department of Marketing, was recently elected Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the world's largest organisation for professional marketers which celebrated its centenary in 2011.

A confirmation letter from the CIM's Director of Membership warmly congratulated Professor Ibeh on this achievement and highlighted his Marketing expertise and experience as the basis for the elevation to the CIM Fellowship. The election entitles Professor Ibeh to use the designatory letters, FCIM.

Budapest seminar on learning management system

Dr Viktor Dörfler of the Management Science Department and Howard Ramsay of the Learning Technology Enhancement Team delivered a seminar on teaching with Moodle at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Viktor covered the conceptual topics focusing on the main questions of curriculum development while Howard concentrated on applications particularly on the use of online assessment. The seminar was well received and it is hoped that this is the initial step of a long-term collaboration.

PhD student's success

Everyone at the Hunter Centre would like to congratulate Dr Jillian Gordon on her recent graduation. Jillian successfully defended her PhD in September and graduated at the November ceremony.

Jillian's thesis was entitled "Power, Wealth and Entrepreneurial Philanthropy in the New Global Economy". The objective of the study was to bring clarity and understanding to the phenomenon of entrepreneurial philanthropy through the examination of five entrepreneurial philanthropists and their foundations. The findings from the survey identified a range of factors that contribute to, and motivate, wealth entrepreneurs to become actively engaged in philanthropy.

Invited speaker at International Conference on Quality and Reliability Engineering

Professor Lesley Walls was an invited speaker at the International Conference on Quality and Reliability Engineering organised by the Indian Statistical Institute and held in Bangalore, India from December 20-22. Professor Walls presented on joint research conducted with Professor John Quigley on "Empirical Bayes Ranking of Low Probability Events with Varying Exposures to Support Risk Informed Decision-Making".

India visit for Management Science professor

Professor Tim Bedford (Management Science) visited the Strathclyde SKIL Business School campus in Delhi in December and gave a presentation to staff and students. This was part of a wider visit to India in which he gave a series of research talks at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata as special guest speaker at the annual Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) conference on Reliability.

He was welcomed by the ISI Director Bimal K Roy and gave three lectures to a leading group of academics, research staff and industrial statistical consultants. This trip is part of a longer association between the Department of Management Science and the ISI which has included exchange visits supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, international supervisor support for a Strathclyde PhD student, joint research papers, and a continuing joint research project.

SBS academic speaks at Scottish Institute for Policing Research seminar

Mik Wisniewski was one of the invited speakers at a seminar organised by the Scottish Institute for Policing Research in Edinburgh in December.

The seminar brought together academics and representatives from the Scottish Police forces, the Scottish Parliament, Audit Scotland and Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary (Scotland) to discuss the research agenda arising from the Scottish Government's decision to create a single national police force by 2013. Mik spoke about 'Performance measurement for the new national force: opportunities and challenges'.

Marketing presentation

Professor Leon Zurawicki, University of Massachusetts, Boston, USA, gave a presentation to the Department of Marketing on November 23 on Neuroscience and Marketing Segmentation.
