Strathclyde Business School, in partnership with its international partners, last year launched the Local Counsellor of the Year Award, to recognise the contribution which Local Counsellors make in supporting the learning of SBS's offshore Masters students (MBA and MSc).

The recipient of this year's award was Rose Wai-man Mao, local counsellor for Managing People in Organisations in Hong Kong. The rigorous process which led to Rose's selection from a field of five nominees included a detailed consideration of the nominees' engagement with students, and views from Strathclyde academics and local centre administrators across four primary criteria: consistently positive evaluations from students; they initiate and maintain helpful contact with Strathclyde academics; appropriate marking levels and quality of assignment feedback; and fast assignment marking turnaround. Seven other criteria were also used and they related to commitment to the programme and its operators, commitment to the local counsellors' community of practice, pedagogical approach and problem solving abilities.

The award was made to Rose on conclusion of the MBA degree presentation ceremony in Hong Kong in December. Professor Colin Eden, Vice Dean International, said, "We are delighted to recognise Rose's tremendous contribution – especially her ability to inspire and encourage students and facilitate a stimulating and enriching learning experience for her students."

Rose Mao was "delighted and honoured" to receive the award. She said of her motivation for being a local counsellor, "I very much appreciate the chance to work with the students and help with their thinking processes and the daunting task of writing essays after so long from being a regular student".
