Academics represent SBS at range of conferences

Some recent conferences – the Operational Research Society conference (September 4-6) and the British Academy of Management conference (September 10-13) and the Academy of Management (August 3-7) - have been well attended by Strathclyde Business School academics.

At the Operational Research conference, which took place in Edinburgh, there were presentations by a large number of Management Science staff. Professor Fran Ackermann was involved in two presentations - one with Jim Alexander and the other with Professor Susan Howick, Professor John Quigley, Professor Lesley Walls and Dr Tom Houghton. Professors Colin Eden and Susan Howick also gave a keynote: Lessons for Project Management. Professor Val Belton and Dr Kerem Akartunali also presented papers.

At the BAM conference in Cardiff, those attending from SBS included Professor Ackermann, Dr Peter McInnes, Dr George Burt, Dr Jill MacBryde, Dr David Mackay, Dr Viktor Dorfler, Professor Peter McKiernan, and Dr Peter Keenan, Professor Colin Eden, Norin Arshed and Professor Eleanor Shaw. A paper co-written by Professor Sara Carter was also presented. Professor Ackermann provided two doctoral symposium sessions (one with Robin Wensley - Warwick University, and one with Nic Beech of St Andrews and Jackie Holloway from the Open University) as well as a Professional Development Workshop and two papers with Professor Eden.

A paper by Dr David Mackay, Department of Management, written with Shakeel Ahmad – “Do as I say and (sometimes) as I do: Exploring the impact of situational leadership practice on strategic change outcomes” – won the best full paper prize in the Strategy as Practice track. His paper with Dr George Burt and Dr Andrew Perchard – Scenario Planning, Strategic Practice and Top Management Team Hyperopia – also won the best full paper prize in the Strategic Foresight track.

Dr Peter Keenan (Management) presented a development paper at the BAM conference within the Strategy-as-Practice track, entitled 'Middle managers practices under umbrella strategy conditions'.

Professor Fran Ackermann was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy of Management in recognition of her substantial and original contribution to 'the intellectual pursuit of the field of management' and a 'significant contribution to the British Academy of Management'.

Dr Viktor Dorfler attended the Academy of Management conference in Boston, MA, and delivered a Professional Developmental Workshop on using dramas for supporting decision takers. Dr Dorfler also obtained a couple of Outstanding Reviewer Awards, one from the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) division and another from the Management Education and Development (MED) division.
