New Masters programme launched

A new Masters programme, the MSc in Leadership for Global Sustainable Cities, has been launched. This innovative programme has a focus on tackling major urban opportunities and issues. The course provides high calibre graduates with the skills and understanding to become the next generation of leaders in the design and delivery of ambitious sustainable city strategies.

Uniquely, the Masters in Leadership for Global Sustainable Cities is based on real world experience gained from sustainable city projects undertaken by Strathclyde and its partners, in the UK and across Europe. The Masters is created and coordinated by the new Institute for Future Cities at University of Strathclyde.

The programme is designed to provide a holistic understanding of how cities operate and provide you with the tools to redesign city systems, raise funding, and gain political and citizen support for transformative city strategies and projects.

With over half the world's population now living in cities, achieving sustainable futures for urban centres is a growing current issue. Achieving global carbon reduction targets and improving the quality of life for citizens across the world is critically dependent on changing the way we live, work, and invest in cities. Commercial and governmental interest in cities as investment opportunities, engines for innovation, and the markets they create is growing dramatically, with significant demand for high calibre graduates in this field.

The Masters in Leadership for Global Sustainable Cities is an innovative taught programme with a problem-solving focus and a strong emphasis on students developing and applying their skills to real-world city situations, with expert guest speakers, opportunities for international experience, and learning from placements, working in genuine projects in two different cities.

The Masters reflects the complex challenges faced by city designers, planners, investors and developers by taking a holistic interdisciplinary approach that draws on expertise from engineering, urban design, business, politics, public policy, sociology and data analytics.

The degree was developed as part of the EU FP7 STEP UP sustainable cities project led by the University of Strathclyde; this project brings together energy and urban planning expertise across four cities: Glasgow, Gothenburg, Riga and Ghent
