First Chemistry-Marketing clinic

The first Chemistry-Marketing Clinic, organised by Dr John Liggat, Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry and Dr Beverly Wagner, Department of Marketing took place during the week of 9th-13th June, 2014. The Clinic provided an occasion for four scientists and eight marketers to work together on a real life mini project for "The East Africa Sisal Company Ltd."

Founded by Mr John Ferguson, this micro-enterprise's mission is to help small scale farmers build sustainable businesses in their local communities. Sisal is a natural fibre crop grown to produce rope and sack. Throughout the academic term Chemistry students have undertaken a series of experiments on the sisal fibres in order to understand its chemical properties and potential applications for commercialisation.

During the clinic week, the students worked in two teams to brainstorm new product ideas and fully evaluate the technical feasibility and market potential for a number of new sisal products. This low cost activity has the potential to save time and costs in the early stages of product development prior to an idea being accepted into the formal development process. The week was a great success, with comments from participants ranging from "very challenging and exciting" to "a very unique experience." Participants from Chemistry were: Laura McCallum, Andrew Smith, Maria Shafiq and Sairah Bashir, and from Marketing: Lujain Nassif, Sansanee Wanametin, Julia Selkovenko, Wei Li, Wei Fang, Jun Wang, Neeraj Sancheti and Shwetal Shah. The clinic was also supported by teaching associate Dr Sharon Ingram.
