HRM professor delivers tourism workforce workshop

Professor Tom Baum of Human Resource Management (HRM) recently delivered a workshop for COMCEC (The Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation) in Ankara, Turkey.

The workshop, for members of the COMCEC Tourism Working Group, was based on his recently completed study, Enhancing the Capacity of Tourism Workforce in the OIC Member Countries for Improved Tourism Service Quality. The report focused on national and regional strategies that governments and the private sector can take to upskill their tourism workforces and also identified international best practice by way of illustration.

Paper presentation for economist

Economics research fellow Stewart Dunlop gave a paper at the 54th European Regional Science Association Conference in St Petersburg in August.

He presented the paper co-written with Sara Davies, European Policies Research Centre and Kim Swales, Fraser of Allander Institute; the title was “Urban-Rural differences in Life Satisfaction in Scotland”.

Professor's new book on strategy

Professor Colin Eden, Department of Strategy and Organisation and Vice Dean, Strathclyde business School, has had his latest book published by Wiley.

"Visual Strategy", co-written with John Bryson and Fran Ackermann, 'goes beyond making the case for good and effective strategic planning to making strategy visual through effective strategy mapping'.

Best paper award

Dr Peter McInnes and Pallavi Mittra won a Best Paper award in the Strategy as Practice stream of the British Academy of Management conference recently. The paper was entitled, "Finding oneself: Subjection, differentiation and lack in the emotionally autonomous subjects of strategic change".

Dr McInnes also ran a doctoral workshop on 'Collecting Qualitative Data' with Richard Jefferies of the West of Scotland University; and a Professional Development Workshop entitled ‘Frontiers of Identity Research’ jointly with other colleagues.

Paper accepted by journal

Dr Julia A Smith (Accounting & Finance) and Dr Renzo Cordina (University of Dundee) have had their paper on "Patenting and the early stage high-technology investor: evidence from the field" accepted for publication in the Wiley journal R&D Management. The fieldwork for this research was funded in part by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland (ICAS).

Students 'highly commended' in 2014 Undergraduate Awards

Four students at the University of Strathclyde have 'Highly Commended' in their respective categories in the 2014 Undergraduate Awards.

One of them was Kevin Krebs, a Strathclyde Business School student, with the others being Shabnam Ellahie (Law), Maria Weikum (Maths & Physics) and Kristopher Young (Social Science).

Each of them were in the running to win their category, which was announced on September 22. Winners were rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to Dublin for the UA Global Summit in November.
