Hospitality and Tourism Management Summer School 2024

Strathclyde Business School’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Summer School launched last year for what was a successful inaugural programme. Students from China, Germany, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Iran studied on the “Frontiers in Hospitality and Tourism Management” course for three weeks under the tutelage of Tom Bourkel, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation.

This year the 10-credit summer school programme runs from July 22 to August 8, offering a unique student experience over the three week period. Participants learn about the key theories and themes in Hospitality and Tourism Management, explore niche tourism industries such as sport, film and TV, music, events, food and the outdoors, as well as take part in a range of social activities creating a rewarding international experience for students.

The programme consists of classroom-based lectures and workshops interspersed with subject-relevant fieldtrips and external trips. Activities on offer include learning to play the bagpipes, a Scottish cooking workshop, fieldtrip to a whisky distillery and a clothing manufacturer, and a Scottish ceilidh.

Karen MacGregor, International Partnerships Manager, said, “Last year’s summer school was a great success – although a SCQF level 7 course, participants were at various stages of their educational journey from sixth form through to undergraduate level and even PhD - and we’re really looking forward to welcoming this year’s group to our campus. The summer school provides students with a useful introduction to a new discipline as well as giving them a taste of being a student at Strathclyde.

“The summer school is taking place at such a good time of year – not only are there multiple events happening across Glasgow but the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe will be on and Scotland will of course be looking beautiful so it’s a great option for those participating to take some time to do their own sightseeing and travel on completion of the programme. The summer school is an ideal way to get an insight into hospitality and tourism management, meet international like-minded peers and take part in some unique Scottish activities.”

Last year’s participants described the programme as a ‘fantastic experience’ and said the ‘teaching and outside activities were well-prepared’.

The deadline for applications this year is April 19. Full details are available on the Hospitality and Tourism Management Summer School webpage: https://www.sbs.strath.ac.uk/short-term-study-visits/SummerSchools/
