Management Science Seminar Series: Creativity: From Insider Phenomenology to an Antenarrative Lens

Abstract: Marc started studying creativity interviewing top chefs as part of his PhD dissertation. As he made active use of his experience as haute cuisine chef within a phenomenologist philosophical stance, he developed a new method called 'Insider Explanatory Phenomenology'. This first study yielded numerous insights about high level creativity which was in line with Viktor's study of Nobel Laureates. Currently the synergies of the two different streams of research are being explored, and they are promising new insights, such as developing further Polányi's notion of indwelling. Marc continued studying creativity through insider interviews, and storytelling became more and more important explicit component of his research. Recently, working with David Boje, the guru of storytelling as a research method, Marc is adopting an antenarrative lens. In this approach creativity is pictured as a journey from an antenarrative, which can unfold into various narratives, into the actual narrative. The talk will also explore the future of this approach to studying creativity.
