SGSSS Event: Designing Rigorous and Reflexive Research - A Participatory Workshop
Event Date: 5 September 2019 - 6 September 2019
Speaker: Professor Ann Cunliffe
Venue: Strathclyde Business School, 199 Cathedral Street, Glasgow G4 0QU
The University of Strathclyde Business School, with the support of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS), is pleased to welcome Professor Ann Cunliffe to Glasgow in September. She will lead a participant focused workshop for current doctoral students who have a demonstrable interest in incorporating and recognising reflexive approaches into their research. The workshop is motivated by the need to acknowledge and proactively work with reflexivity and self-reflexivity in organizational studies, which has become increasingly evident over the past 20 years (Cunliffe, 2011).
Applications are invited from current full and part-time doctoral students within the Accounting, Finance, Business & Management’ (AFBM) pathway at universities across Scotland. The two-day event is intended for researchers employing qualitative research methods, who are at the pre-design / design stage of their studies, and who seek to incorporate reflexivity as fundamental aspect of their research methodology.
Applicants are required to submit a 200-300 word statement that explains why reflexive practice is important to their research, by July 31. These will be considered by the organising committee, and successful applicants informed by the August 12. Places are limited to 20 participants, and we expect this to be oversubscribed. Invited attendees will be further asked to submit a 500-word overview of their research, by August 26, for Ann’s reading prior to the workshop.
Professor Ann Cunliffe’s current research interests lie at the intersection of organizational studies, philosophy and communications, exploring how leaders and managers shape organizational life, identities and action in living conversations. In particular, she is interested in examining the relationship between language and collaborative, responsive and ethical ways of managing organizations. Other interests include: leadership; self-work; sensemaking; developing reflexive approaches to research, practice and learning; and supporting non-positivist qualitative research.
In addition to her current role at Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo (FGV-EAESP) in São Paulo Brazil, Ann has held positions at the University of Leeds and the University of Bradford, as well as the University of New Mexico, the University of New Hampshire, and California State University in the USA. She is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan in Italy, and Aalborg University in Denmark.
Ann recently co-edited the Sage Handbook of Qualitative Business and Management Research Methods (2018). She has published articles in Organizational Research Methods, Human Relations, Management Learning, the British Journal of Management, and Organization Studies.

Funding is available to cover travel and overnight accommodation costs (5th September only) for participants from non-Glasgow based universities. Requests will be considered at the application stage, and agreed expenses reimbursed after the workshop upon the submission of original receipts. Attendees are responsible for booking their own travel and accommodation. There is no fee to attend this workshop.
