We are delighted to introduce speakers from the UK, US and South Africa providing central bank, academic and industry perspectives on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). They will look at the opportunities a CDBC will create in the UK and elsewhere, as well as the connections with other forms of money, the implications for domestic and international commerce, business model innovation, and financial inclusion.

A Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is an electronic form of central bank money that could be used by households and businesses to make payments. CBDC could present several opportunities for the way a central bank could achieve its objectives of maintaining monetary and financial stability.

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas has become the first country to issue a central bank-backed digital currency known as the Sand Dollar. China is currently testing a pilot programme for its digital yuan with a $1.5 million giveaway, and the Japanese government is expected to include consideration of a CBDC in its official economic plan. The European Central Bank has recently launched an online survey about the issuance of a digital euro as a CBDC and means of payment in the euro area. The Bank of England published a discussion paper on CBDCs in March 2020 and has been seeking feedback on issuance of UK CBDC.

Panellists for this event are Louise Johnston -Policy Manager at Bank of England, Prof Jim Senn - Emeritus Professor at Georgia State University and Co-founder Georgia Fintech Academy, Alan Jeftha - Partner at Dentons South Africa and Michael Zolandz - Chair of Financial Regulatory and Compliance at Dentons.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A
