Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between accounting and the production of popular culture. Based primarily on interviews with individuals responsible for organising and managing musician-funded music production projects, the paper aims to build upon and challenge recent research that has postulated a positive and transformative role of accounting in the production of popular culture. The findings of our study highlight how accounting struggles to have a positive, transformative impact on the behaviour and activities of musician-funded production projects. That said, we find that accounting does have a limited role to play within this environment. Accounting's use is carefully and cautiously managed by music production staff who skilfully blend accounting with creative and musical elements to produce a recorded musical product that satisfies all parties involved in its creation.
