Abstract: The entrepreneur proposes and the world disposes. This tension lies at the bottom of debates about entrepreneurship (distinct domain vs context), opportunities (is this a useful concept?), uncertainty (can it be managed?), etc. This tension finds perhaps its most soul-searching expression in the case of Theranos. It raises questions about language, future, and associated scholarship that we will explore in the session. My most recent paper on the distinction between player and analyst stances and on the opportunity language in the Theranos case should provide a stimulating background to the session.
