Abstract:  "With the proliferation of global supply chains, countries have specialized in performing specific business functions within industries, such as R&D or fabrication. In this paper, we quantify the extent to which differences in national CO2 emission intensities can be attributed to trade. To this end, we develop an analytical framework based on regression analysis and input-output methods. Using a global input-output table for 2008, emission data and compatible occupation-based employment data, we find that trade affected the emission intensities of several large economies substantially if functional specialization is considered, as opposed to when only conventional industry specialization is accounted for."
