Abstract:

In response to increasingly complex health and social care needs and tightening fiscal constraints, integration has been proposed as a valid policy response, leading to changes in governance arrangements and joint working at a service level. Applying the service ecosystem framework, a holistic perspective of the health and social care is proposed. This offers better understanding of the interconnectedness between the domains of the health and social care ecosystem, including their unique and shared contexts, and the various actors and institutions involved. Drawing on an illustrative case, three interdependent types of integration (structural, institutional and relational) are suggested, which contribute to enabling or constraining value co-creation.
