Abstract:
Considerable research has shown that male and female leaders are evaluated differently in terms of leadership effectiveness even when they demonstrate the same task- or relationoriented leader behaviours. However, it remains controversial how they are evaluated and why gender differences exist. This study aims to address this issue by adopting a metaanalytic approach. The meta-analytic results based on 96 articles with 119 samplesĀ  revealed that task- and relation-oriented leader behaviours exert opposite direct and indirect effect (via leader attraction) on leadership effectiveness. The indirect effect of task- and relation-oriented leader behaviours on leadership effectiveness through leader attraction is stronger for female than male leaders. The positive direct effect of task-oriented leader behaviours on leadership effectiveness is stronger for female leaders in high power distance culture and in masculinity culture. These results provide implications for female leaders to achieve effective leadership by demonstrating appropriate leader behaviours according to the leadership influencing approaches and the cultural contexts.
