Summary: This seminar will discuss the use of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), the foundational topic model, to identify the emergence of a narrative within economic thought (ie the occurrence of a “paradigm shift”). It will also examine whether topic models serve as a substitute or complement to traditional bibliometric methods, such as citation counts, in detecting shifts in academic discourse.
