In this mini-lecture, Viktor Dörfler explores the evolving role of artificial intelligence in management science. Management Science is the discipline that supports managers in solving problems and making decisions through modelling.

Despite the recent excitement around AI, only a small fraction of implementations deliver the expected benefits, and just 4% of firms are truly innovating with AI. This session begins with a brief overview of the different types of AI, highlighting how it differs from the human mind. This comparison sets the stage for understanding AI’s practical uses, particularly in analytics.

The lecture then turns to the opportunities presented by generative AI, before addressing some of the challenges, including the AI sustainability paradox. Viktor will also touch on less commonly discussed aspects of ethics and sustainability, encouraging reflection and discussion.

This session draws on his experience as a scholar and practitioner; Viktor brings academic rigour to life with real-world implementation stories.

By attending this masterclass, you will:

  • Understand the key differences between AI and the human mind
  • Learn how to ask more insightful questions about AI
  • Start to develop an appreciation of how to evaluate AI implementations
