Reflections on doing engaged scholarship: Dr Chloe Steadman
Event Date: 18 February 2026
Speaker: Dr Chloe Steadman, Manchester Metropolitan University
Location: Online
Time: 2pm
Academic research is increasingly expected to have a real-world impact beyond the ivory tower, as captured in REF impact case studies. One approach for enhancing the relevance and impact of academic work is engaged scholarship – a participatory style of research involving planning, delivering, and disseminating research with partners external to the university. However, there is variable support for engaged scholars across institutions and they can face challenges around partnership working and publishing. This presentation will draw on learnings from two impact-driven place research projects for UK Government and local authorities to outline some of the main opportunities and perils involved in doing engaged scholarship. The presentation draws on two published papers on this theme:
- Steadman, C and Millington, S. (2022). Researching with places: On using engaged scholarship in marketing. Qualitative Market Research 25(5): 646-661. https://doi.org/10.1108/QMR-01-2022-0012.
