Employment Relations in the US Healthcare Industry:
The Role of Union-Management Partnership
The US healthcare industry faces enormous challenges. Among those challenges is the relationship between the industry and its workforce. This presentation will provide an overview of the state of employment relations in US healthcare. It will also discuss efforts to improve employment relations in this industry through union-management partnerships. The results of studies of three local partnerships will be presented.
Paul is Professor of Labor Studies at Penn State University where he is head of the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations. He also holds a professorship in the Department of Health Policy and Administration.
Paul's research focuses on labour relations and union organising in the health care industry, transnational labor relations issues in the healthcare industry, union structure and governance, union member commitment, and union democracy. Paul is also involved in trade union education. He is visiting Scotland and is researching workplace partnerships in healthcare, particularly those involving nurses.
