Students make the top three of nationwide marketing competition

Two Strathclyde Business School students are now in the top three of the CIM’s Marketing Excellence Awards and will attend the awards dinner in April.
The Pitch, run by The Chartered Institute of Marketing, is a competition for undergraduate students, designed to recognise and reward the marketing talent of the future. Students are tasked with a real-life marketing challenge set by a leading global brand with allows the students the opportunity to apply their learning from their degrees.
Thomas Cooper and Adam Dickson are now the third team in three years from Strathclyde Business School to reach the top three after having successfully got through the previous challenges including the live pitching final on February 28. Getting to this stage is testament to their hard work, dedication and teamwork. This year’s challenge was set by one of Europe’s leading food retailers, Lidl, and was focused on Lidl’s aim to reduce plastic packaging by 20% by 2022 – the challenge asked, “How can we keep our customers informed of our commitment and progress in the lead up to 2022, whilst helping customers to reduce their plastic use?”
Thomas McAlinden, Department of Marketing, who supervised the team, said, “I am delighted for Thomas and Adam to reach the top three and delighted for Strathclyde as this is now the third year running that students from the University of Strathclyde Business School have made it this far.
“With our two previous teams having won the competition outright twice over the past two years, we have everything crossed for Thomas and Adam that they too can get the win but we are already so proud of them for making it to the awards final. The CIM competition allows our students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of marketing principles, applying theory learned in a real life context which cements the University of Strathclyde as truly the ‘place of useful learning’.
Adam and Thomas said, “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as one of the top three finalists. The experience has been truly unforgettable and we have learnt so much. Delivering our pitch to industry experts was a remarkable experience and an opportunity of a lifetime. We look forward to the awards ceremony and are keeping our fingers crossed for the hat-trick!"
The winning team will receive £1,500, a ‘Marketers of the Future’ award at CIM’s Marketing Excellence Awards and complimentary CIM membership for each team member.
