Engage with Strathclyde - the University’s flagship programme of events taking place throughout May 2021 - is now underway, with Strathclyde Business School contributing a number of events to the month-long programme.
Engage with Strathclyde hosts over 60 events in all subject areas as well as the fascinating Images of Research exhibition. Delegates have the opportunity to find out more about our world leading research, and for industry, the public and third sector, how they can work with us to collaborate in a variety of ways.
Strathclyde Business School events kick off with Dr Anastasios Hadjisolomou and Dr Irma Booyens looking at the impact of Covid-19 on employment experiences in the Scottish hospitality and tourism sector on May 13 from 10am-12 noon. The hospitality industry has been one of the sectors most impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. This event looks at research carried out on the effects over the last year on employees working in this industry. A panel of experts from the sector will discuss and debate the results of a large-scale research survey conducted by a team at The University of Strathclyde. The research explores the treatment and experiences of workers in the Scottish hospitality sector and the impact of COVID-19 has had on the current employment environment.
The first event in a series of Directors’ Insights from the Centre for Board & Director Development at Strathclyde Business School takes place on May 17 as part of Engage. Entitled "Are boards falling short? The questions all Directors should ask", this webinar will be hosted by Dr Phil Considine, Director of Strathclyde Executive Education, who will share plans for new Board level programmes, knowledge exchange and thought leadership events and the speaker is the experienced FTSE Chair and former UK IoD Chair, Charlotte Valeur, who will be sharing her experiences and introducing the concept of “Valueism”, from her new book Effective Directors: The Right Questions to Ask (Routledge 2021).
Dr Elke Loeffler is leading a webinar on the theme of "User and community co-production for a more resilient society" on May 18 from 2.30-5pm. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the important and distinctive contributions that communities can make to better public outcomes. The question is to what extent and how can public services make better use of community power to achieve a more resilient and just society and make public policies more effective in a post-Covid world. This interactive workshop will showcase good practice in user and community co-production in key public services in Scotland and internationally, ranging from employment services to criminal justice and social care.
Dr Euan Barlow is leading two events: on May 18, "IDeA: Management Science in Practice" is a lunchtime event which will provide a window into the work of Management Science and the IDeA Centre, setting out a view for rethinking manufacturing in Scotland. On May 25 he will be looking at evidence-based design of next generation wind farm service vessels. Both events are from 12-1pm.
"What works in Education? An evaluation of the effects of composite classes and class size" is an event looking at how we can better use data to inform educational decision making and improve learning outcomes. Dr Markus Gehrsitz and a colleague from the School of Education will be leading the event which runs from 3-5pm.
Increased devolution and Brexit has led to a much greater interest in understanding the operation of regional economies and how interdependent they are. Mairia Spowage, Fraser of Allander Institiute, will be leading this one day workshop on multi-sectoral regional modelling. Running from 10.30am-4.30pm, this workshop will bring together people who build, are attempting to build, or who are interested in using models at a sub-national level, utilising regional data and modelling techniques where there are data gaps. Attendees should be interested in sub-national economic accounts, Input-Output (I-O), and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling.
