Engage events at Strathclyde Business School

Engage with Strathclyde is the University of Strathclyde’s flagship events programme, running from May 3 to 13. The events programme is designed to provide multiple opportunities for industry, the public and third sectors to find out more about the University’s world-leading research, innovation and technologies, as well as how to benefit from our research, consultancy, CPD and collaborative knowledge exchange. This year Engage with Strathclyde is running three different event formats so there is something for everyone - online, hybrid and face to face events.

Strathclyde Business School has contributed a number of events to the programme throughout the two week period.

The first event is on May 5 from 10am to 1pm and is entitled Food Waste Matters. If global food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the US.  In the UK, households currently waste around 4.5 million tonnes of edible food every year. However, addressing the challenge of food waste is a complex, systemic issue requiring changes in policy, supply chain, consumption and attitudes. aim of this event is to create an agenda for research around Food Waste. The event will have an expert panel with colleagues from Strathclyde alongside local food suppliers and food waste organisations. Attendees will then participate in an exercise to set the agenda for this important area of research and to continue the conversation. This event is targeted at academics, public and third sector organisations interested in contributing to future research around understanding food waste and food waste reduction.

The pandemic has dominated our lives over the last two years. It brought together many in the university community as researchers and scientists made contributions to the national effort. The University of Strathclyde accelerated innovation and collaborative working in many areas to drive new technology, products and processes. Strathclyde and the Pandemic takes place on May 9 from 9.30am to 2.30pm and looks at the range of activities which took place across the university, and celebrates the university’s role during the Covid-19 pandemic. This event will discuss how we can harness these innovations for future working and policy-making.

Next is the online event Turning NetZero targets into Action on May 10 from 3-5pm. Transforming business to achieve net zero goals now represents a critical task for managers and directors. This event will highlight, through case studies and discussions, the central role that solutions-focussed education and network support play in this journey. Delegates will be introduced to the Climate Solutions Progamme, a collaboration with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and the IOD, and will explore how it provides learning and support. Delegates will benefit by learning about the Climate Solutions Programme and how it is designed to help organisations achieve goals and targets set in response to the climate emergency. Attendees will explore how the courses and network has helped participants deliver impactful change within their organisations, and more widely within society.

Also on May 10 is The Future of Financial Regulation Innovation. Running from 1-3pm, this is a hybrid event. The recently published ‘UK Fintech Research & Innovation Roadmap’ highlighted financial regulation as one of four priority themes to boost economic recovery, drive growth and create jobs over the next ten years.  Strathclyde is a key contributor to this Roadmap, and the event will discuss the future of financial regulation and key initiatives that will accelerate research and enable innovation in RegTech.

An in-person event focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation will take place on May 12 - Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Scotland will run from 9.30am -1pm. Innovation and entrepreneurship are of national importance for achieving a more inclusive and equitable society, combatting inequality, and achieving our environmental and sustainability targets such as NetZero. National institutions and regional entrepreneurial ecosystems are at the heart of these efforts by providing access to resources, support, and, more generally, a supportive environment for innovators and entrepreneurs. The aim of this half-day event is to collaboratively engage with a diverse group of actors from the Scottish entrepreneurial ecosystem and work towards strategies and actions for more inclusive, sustainable, and efficient ecosystem(s). There will be a networking lunch at 12.30.

Finally SDGZero will take place on May 12 from 3-4.30pm online. The problem solvers for environmental and human issues are already out there, they just need to be empowered and trained. If we can give them the skills in innovation and entrepreneurship, they can be the solution providers to the world's current social and ecological problems and co-create a sustainable world. The event will discuss how a bottom-up approach, equipping local communities with training, and establishing an ecosystem, can develop solutions.  A recent global survey highlights the failure of entrepreneurship education in schools and our proposal for SDG Zero is a solution to this.
