Fully funded scholarships for Strathclyde MBA

Up to five MBA students will be fully funded for their studies this year at the University of Strathclyde Business School thanks to a philanthropic donation from businessman Dr Charles Huang.

Students will need to be of ‘exceptional merit’ to be awarded the generous scholarship which covers the full fees of the full time MBA programme as well as a generous stipend to cover living costs during studies.

In September 2021, Strathclyde received a £50 million donation from alumnus Charles Huang PhD through his philanthropic foundation – the Charles Huang Foundation (CHF). Dr Huang gained his MBA from Strathclyde in 1989 and his PhD in Marketing in 1994. He is a global business leader and founder and chairman of Pasaca Capital Inc, a California-based private equity firm established in 2016. The CHF is a private non-profit corporation with a mission to accelerate and encourage advanced education, health-related research and entrepreneurship on a global platform. The Donation is made as a token of gratitude to the UK for the scholarship that facilitated Dr Huang’s opportunity to be educated at Strathclyde and he also sought to honour Professor Stephen Young, his supervisor and mentor during his PhD Studies.

In Professor Young’s memory, the Charles Huang Foundation donation is funding up to five scholarship awards each year for scholars of exceptional merit undertaking the Strathclyde MBA on a full-time study basis (one year) in Glasgow. SYGL seeks to develop global leaders and talent in society and business.  Alongside their MBA studies, each student receiving a scholarship will undertake an associated leadership programme via the Stephen Young Institute for International Business (SYIIB) and be part of the SYIIB community.

All SYGL scholars will undertake Strathclyde MBA studies as a member of the MBA cohort. The SYGL Leadership track is a programme of experiential learning and mentor support to help the successful scholarship holders’ development as future global leaders. The SYGL programme will provide essential leadership skills and competencies to enable graduates to be leaders who can help organisations succeed in a responsible and sustainable way.

SYGL scholars could benefit from one of a number of additional opportunities: attending MBA elective classes at Strathclyde Business School’s international centres (including flights/accommodation); an international exchange with another university; or taking part in a special research project within the GCID (Glasgow City Innovation District) and the TIC (Technology and Innovation Centre) zone.

In addition, all SYGL scholars will be offered mentoring/coaching support by a business leader, CEO or other senior executive of a large company with an industry focus.

Dr Charles Huang was fortunate enough to secure funding to continue his studies at a doctoral level at Strathclyde. Dr Huang believes that the opportunity to progress his studies via the former Strathclyde International Business Unit hugely developed and influenced his consequent business career and, as a result, wants to extend the opportunity for further study beyond the Strathclyde MBA. More specifically, on successful completion of the MBA and SYGL Leadership track, SYGL scholars who would be keen to follow the same learning journey as Dr Huang would be considered for progression to a fully funded PhD or DBA (Doctor of Business Administration).
