Economics student awarded prize at Scottish Graduate conference

Césarine Boinet, third year PhD student in Economics, was awarded the prize for the best PhD presentation at the recent Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) Conference.

The prize was awarded by the SGPE Executive Committee, following nominations from attending academics, for Césarine’s presentation at the SGPE Conference on January 11, entitled ‘The Child Penalty: Gender Norms and Occupational Sortings.’ Césarine is supervised by Agnese Romiti and Jonathan Norris and is one of several students funded via an Inspiring Children's Futures CDT scholarship.

Also, first year SGSSS-funded PhD student Kathrin Fuerst (supervised by Markus Gehsitz and Stuart McIntyre) was nominated and commended by the awarding panel for her presentation ‘Economics of Crime and Offender Rehabilitation: The effect of disclosure requirements for criminal records on recidivism’, and second year SRSS REA funded PhD student Annie Ta (supervised by Jonathan Norris and Otto Lenhart) was nominated for her presentation ‘The long legacy of war on health: Evidence from Cambodia’.

In total, six Economics students from Strathclyde presented at the SGPE Conference and were among 44 PhD students drawn from the eight participating Scottish Universities. A strong contingent of University of Strathclyde staff from the Department of Economics were in attendance, alongside staff from the other participating Universities and the full current cohort of SGPE MSc students.
