Marketing welcomes range of guest speakers

The Department of Marketing has welcomed a range of diverse guest speakers for the 3rd Year ‘Strategic Marketing in an International Context’ class. Collaborating with class coordinator Michelle Fisher, each speaker provides an interesting internally-focused case study for students.

Police Scotland Superintendent June Peebles and her colleague Danie Russo presented on Police Scotland’s International strategy and the work they are doing in global markets, specifically Malawi, Zambia and Colombia.  The team were heading back to Malawi the day after the class talk to support local forces in their development of policy with particular reference to child protection and women’s rights.

UK India Business Council (UKIBC) Managing Director, Kevin McCole has been a regular guest speaker for the past three years and gives an interesting context to developing business links in India for UK businesses as well as hosting delegations from India for partnership development with UK businesses. Kevin discusses the different approaches some organisations, including JCB, Pavers and MG, have to internationalisation.

Scottish Enterprise, Senior Marketing Manager, Rob Catterson has been involved as a guest speaker on this class for the past two years. Rob is responsible for Brand Scotland and provides a detailed insight into global marketing from the context of a government agency, looking at the development and execution of the strategy and advocacy of branding a country.

The class benefits from the esteem of the guest speakers and the ability for students to contextualise theoretical underpinning to real life examples. Guests answer a series of enlightened and intelligent questions from the students, whilst students demonstrate interest in further career development and internships with the companies represented.

The Department of Marketing are grateful to the guest speakers and look forward to working with them again in the future.
