Hospitality and Tourism Management students shortlisted for ABTA selection day

Two Strathclyde Business School students made it onto a shortlist of five for a paid summer internship with ABTA, a trade association of travel agents and tour operators in the UK.

Undergraduate students Kwally Nugent and Emily Wilson, who are studying Hospitality and Tourism Management, both attended the ABTA selection day last month along with students from Surrey and Lincoln universities.

This was the first such paid internship day ABTA has offered since 2019 as there was a pause put on the process during the pandemic.  ABTA invites students from its 12 university partners to put themselves forward for the one-month internship. The aim is to give students a taste of the travel industry and show how rewarding a job in the sector can be. Students are also helped to develop the skills and knowledge required for a successful start to their careers.

During the selection day, the five candidates heard from various teams about their roles at ABTA and presentations were given by representatives from the membership, legal and public affairs departments.

Vicki Wolf, head of education and career development at ABTA described all shortlisted candidates as 'incredibly impressive' which made it a 'difficult task' choosing just one.

Dr Konstantinos Tomazos of the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, said, "We and our students are very excited to partner with ABTA and have full access to their network and industry expertise. We congratulate Kwally and Emily on being the first of many students to take advantage of great opportunities at the tourism industry's cutting edge."
